The Struggler

Op de heide tussen de terrils van Waterschei en het vliegveld Genk-Zwartberg, de Klaverberg, vind je de wintereiken hakhoutstoven (Querqus petrea). Er wordt geschat dat deze enorme hakhoutstoven ouder zijn dan 800 jaar en dus de Kleine Ijstijd (15de - 19de eeuw) hebben overleefd. Dat net wintereiken tot deze enorme hakhoutstoven zijn uitgegroeid en niet zomereiken is te danken aan de oude boeren die handelden volgens het principe “Wintereiken geven minder eikels dus zomereiken sparen en wintereiken kappen”. Met stamomtrekken gaande tot 17 meter behoren deze hakhoutstoven tot de grootste van Limburg. Deze imposante boomformaties zijn een overblijfsel van eeuwenlange exploitatie als hakhout (een soort van duurzame bosbouw avant la lettre).

De wintereiken van de Klaverberg zijn voor mij een metafoor van de kracht van het leven, de schoonheid van de strijd die deze bomen eeuwenlang leverden om te steeds te blijven groeien, ondanks alle verminkingen. Ze zijn voor mij iconen van de esthetiek van het onvolmaakte, van ‘the struggle to survive’. Met de recente gebeurtenissen in Europa/wereld wordt dit ook een reeks over hoop.
Zij waren voor mij een inspiratiebron voor mijn reeks ‘The Struggler’.
In de winter van 2021 fietste ik naar de Klaverberg om daar ter plaatse acrylschetsen en houtskooltekeningen te maken. Deze gebruikte ik dan verder als basis voor mijn olieverfschilderijen op hout en grafisch werk.

The Struggler-reeks bestaat uit houtkoolschetsen op papier, acrylschetsen op doek (beiden 'en plein air' gemaakt), olieverfschilderijen op hout en ‘virtuele’ houtsnedes (IPadtekeningen).

The sessile oaks (Querqus petrea) can be found on the heath between the Waterschei slag heaps and Genk-Zwartberg airport, the Klaverberg. It is estimated that these huge sessile oaks are older than 800 years and thus survived the Little Ice Age (15th - 19th century). The fact that sessile oaks have just grown into these enormous coppice stoves and not pedunculate oaks is due to the old farmers who acted according to the principle "Sessile oaks give fewer acorns, so save pedunculate oaks and cut sessile oaks". With trunk circumferences of up to 17 meters, these coppice stoves are among the largest in Limburg (B). These imposing tree formations are a remnant of centuries of exploitation as coppice (a kind of sustainable forestry 'avant la lettre').

The sessile oaks of the Klaverberg are to me a metaphor of the power of life, the beauty of the struggle these trees fought for centuries to keep growing, despite all the mutilations. For me they are icons of the aesthetics of the imperfect, of 'the struggle to survive'. With the recent events in Europe/world, this is also becoming a series about hope.

They were a source of inspiration for my series 'The Struggler'.

In the winter of 2021 I cycled to the Klaverberg to make acrylic sketches and charcoal drawings on the spot. I then used these as a base for my oil paintings on wood and graphic work.

The Struggler series consists of charcoal sketches on paper, acrylic sketches on canvas (both made 'en plein air'), oil paintings on wood and 'virtual' woodcuts (IPad drawings).
